બચ્યા હતા ! એનો સાવ સાદો અર્થ એટલો જ કે મારી પાસે આનંદ અને રજાના માત્ર એક હજાર દિવસ જ બચ્યાં હતાં ! મને આઘાત લાગ્યો કારણ કે મારી પાસે મારા કુટુંબ અને મિત્રો સાથે ગાળવાના ફક્ત એટલા જ દિવસો બચ્યા હતા. હું વિચારમાં પડી ગયો. ઘણો વખત વિચાર્યા પછી એ જ દિવસે ગામમાં જઈ, બેચાર સ્ટોરમાં રખડીને હું એક હજાર લખોટીઓ
લઈ આવ્યો. એ લખોટીઓને મારા ટેબલ પર એક કાચની બરણીમાં ગોઠવી દીધી. દર શનિવારે હું એમાંથી એક લખોટી કાઢીને ફેંકી દઉં છું. જેમ જેમ હું એ બરણીને ખાલી થતી જોઉં છું તેમ તેમ મને મારા મિત્રો, સગાંવહાલાં અને કુટુંબીજનો માટે વધારે ને વધારે સમય ફાળવવાની ઈચ્છા થતી જાય છે. અગત્યના અને કરવા જેવાં કામોની મેં યાદી પણ બનાવી

દરિયાને તીર એક રેતીની ઓટલી
ઊચીં અટૂલી અમે બાંધી જી રે.
પગલું તે એક એક પાડે મહેમાન એમ
રામજીની આણ અમે દીધી જી રે.

પહેલા મહેમાન તમે આવો, સૂરજદેવ,
પગલું સોનેરી એક પાડજો જી રે.
પગલામાં નવલખ તારાની ભાત ને
સંધ્યાના રંગ બે’ક માંડજો જી રે.

બીજા મહેમાન તમે આવો, પવનદેવ,
પગલું પનોતું એક પાડજો જી રે.
પગલામાં વાત લખો પરીઓના દેશની
ફૂલડાંની ફોરમ પૂરજો જી રે.

ત્રીજા મહેમાન તમે આવો, સમદરદેવ,
પગલું મોતીનું એક પાડજો જી રે.
પગલામાં મહેલ ચણી સાતે પાતાળના,
માણેકના દીવા પ્રગટાવજો જી રે.

ઘીરે મહેમાન જરા ધીરેથી આવજો,
પગલાં તે પાડજો જાળવી જી ને,
જોજો વિલાય ના એ પગલાંની પાંદડી,
બાળુડે ઓટલી બનાવી જી રે.

પ્રશ્ન કોઈ પણ નથી તો પૂછવું કેવી રીતે,
ના લખ્યું હો કાંઈ તો એ ભૂંસવું કેવી રીતે ?

પથ્થરોના આ નગરમાં કાચ જેવી લાગણી,
તું જતાવીને પૂછે છે તૂટવું કેવી રીતે ?

છે ખબર પૂરેપૂરી એની કથાના અંતની,
શાપ છે સહદેવનો તો સૂચવું કેવી રીતે ?

દ્વાર પર આવી ટકોરા સામટા ચૂપ થાય તો,
દ્વારને અવઢવ રહે કે ખૂલવું કેવી રીતે ?

શિલ્પ ચ્હેરાની પીડાનું આંખ સામે જોઈને,
છે વિસામણ એક આંસુ લૂછવું કેવી રીતે ?

કેટલા જન્મો થયા છે કેદ આ કોઠે પડી –
પૂછતું કોઈ નથી કે છૂટવું કેવી રીતે ?

આ ભરી મહેફિલ સજાવી બેસતાં લાખો છતાં,
જૂજ લોકોને ખબર છે ઊઠવું કેવી રીતે !
